What Is Companion Care — and Who Needs It?

Companion care is exactly what the name suggests: a friendly, reliable person who shows up, sits down, and genuinely engages with your loved one. It is not nursing. It is not physical therapy. It is human connection — and for many Pittsburgh-area seniors, it is the one thing that makes the difference between a good day and a very hard one.

You might be wondering whether companion care is the right fit. These are common signs families notice:

  • Mom hasn't left the house in weeks and seems withdrawn or flat
  • Dad calls you four or five times a day because he just needs someone to talk to
  • Your parent has stopped doing hobbies they used to love
  • A recent health event — a fall, a hospital stay, a diagnosis — has left them hesitant and isolated
  • You live in another part of the country and worry constantly about who is checking in

If any of those sound familiar, a companion can help.

What a Mary Angels Companion Actually Does

Our companions are matched to each client's personality and interests, not just their schedule. A visit might look very different from one home to the next — and that is intentional.

Conversation and engagement:

  • Talking, reminiscing, and listening without rushing
  • Reading aloud, playing cards or board games, doing puzzles together
  • Watching a favorite show or sporting event side-by-side (yes, Steelers and Pirates games count)

Light activity and routine support:

  • Accompanying your loved one on a walk around Frick Park or Allegheny Commons
  • Riding along to appointments, errands, or a haircut
  • Helping maintain a daily routine that provides structure and comfort

Gentle supervision and family peace of mind:

  • Keeping an eye on safety without being intrusive
  • Noticing changes in mood, appetite, or behavior and communicating them to family
  • Being a consistent, familiar face your loved one can count on

Companion care pairs naturally with personal care and homemaker services when a senior needs a bit more hands-on help around the house.

Companion Care and Isolation: Why It Matters in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh winters are long. Neighborhoods like Dormont, Penn Hills, and Robinson Township can feel cut off when roads are icy and driving is no longer safe. For older adults already dealing with mobility challenges or early memory changes, weeks can go by without meaningful in-person contact.

Social isolation is not just uncomfortable — it affects sleep, appetite, cognitive sharpness, and motivation. Families often describe watching a parent "fade" after a spouse passes or after they stop driving. Regular companion visits interrupt that pattern gently and naturally.

If your loved one has a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, companion care is especially valuable. Familiar routines, familiar faces, and calm conversation can reduce agitation and confusion. Learn more about how we approach Alzheimer's & dementia care.

How Companion Care Works at Mary Angels

Getting started is straightforward. We do not require long contracts or complicated paperwork before you can get help.

  1. Call or email us. Reach us at 412-900-9354 or info@maryangelshomecare.com. Someone on our team — not a call center — will pick up.
  2. Free in-home assessment. We come to your loved one's home in Pittsburgh or Allegheny County, meet the family, and learn what matters most.
  3. Careful matching. We introduce a companion whose personality and availability fit your loved one's needs and schedule.
  4. Flexible scheduling. A few hours a week, daily visits, or something more intensive — we work around your family's reality.

Most families are matched and visited within 48 hours of their first call.

If you are also carrying the caregiving load yourself and feeling stretched thin, companion care can be a meaningful part of a respite care plan that gives you genuine breathing room.

Frequently asked questions

Is companion care the same as a home health aide?
No. A home health aide (HHA) typically performs personal care tasks like bathing or dressing and may work under a medical plan of care. A companion focuses on social engagement, conversation, supervision, and light accompaniment — no medical or clinical tasks are involved. Mary Angels is a non-medical home care agency. For a full breakdown, see our guide on the difference between an HHA, CNA, PCA, and companion.
How many hours a week do families usually schedule?
It varies widely. Some families start with two or three visits a week, each lasting two to four hours. Others need daily companionship, especially if their loved one lives alone. We have no minimum-hour requirement, and we are happy to adjust the schedule as your family's needs change.
Can the companion drive my parent to appointments or errands?
Yes. Transportation is one of the most practical things a companion provides — rides to a doctor's office, the pharmacy, a haircut, a church service, or simply a drive to enjoy the fall colors along the Allegheny. We coordinate transportation as part of our companion care visits.
My mother has early-stage dementia. Can a companion still help?
Absolutely. Companion care is often one of the most beneficial supports for someone in the early or middle stages of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. Familiar routines and a calm, steady presence can ease anxiety and reduce confusion. We also offer dedicated Alzheimer's and dementia care for families who need more structured support.
How do I know the companion is a good match for my dad?
We take matching seriously. Before we introduce anyone, we talk with your family about your father's personality, interests, schedule, and communication style. If the first match does not feel right, we find another — no hard feelings and no extra cost. The relationship has to be genuine to be helpful.
What does companion care cost, and does insurance cover it?
Cost depends on hours and scheduling. We are transparent about pricing during the free assessment — no surprise fees. Some long-term care insurance policies cover companion care. Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver may also cover in-home care services for eligible adults. We can help you understand your options.
