Keeping North Hills Seniors at Home

The North Hills is home to thousands of older adults who have spent decades building their lives here — raising families near North Park, attending St. Alexis or Resurrection Parish, shopping along McKnight Road, and walking the trails around Siebert Lake. When getting older starts to make daily tasks harder, most people in this community share one clear wish: they want to stay in their own home.

That is exactly what Mary Angels Home Care exists to support. We are a Pennsylvania-licensed, family-owned, women-owned agency based in Pittsburgh. Our caregivers help North Hills seniors with the everyday tasks that keep life running smoothly — and that help families breathe a little easier.

We serve communities throughout the North Hills including:

  • McCandless and Wexford
  • Ross Township and West View
  • Shaler Township and Etna
  • Millvale, Aspinwall, and Fox Chapel
  • And surrounding Allegheny County neighborhoods

What Our Caregivers Do

Mary Angels provides non-medical home care, which means our caregivers are not nurses or therapists, but they provide the hands-on, day-to-day support that makes independent living possible. Services available to North Hills families include:

  • Personal care — bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting assistance done with dignity and respect
  • Companion care — conversation, shared activities, errands, and friendly presence for seniors who live alone
  • Homemaker services — light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and grocery runs
  • Respite care — scheduled relief for family caregivers who need time to rest or handle other responsibilities
  • Alzheimer's and dementia care — patient, consistent support for seniors with memory loss, keeping routines calm and predictable
  • 24/7 and live-in care — around-the-clock presence for seniors who need continuous assistance or family members who want peace of mind overnight

If your parent was recently discharged from UPMC Passavant, which sits right in McCandless, or from AHN Saint Vincent nearby, we can often have a caregiver in place within 48 hours to support their transition back home.

Why Families in the North Hills Choose Mary Angels

Home care is a deeply personal decision. You are inviting someone into your parent's home, trusting them with your loved one's safety and dignity. Here is why North Hills families call us:

  • Local roots. We are a Pittsburgh-based agency, not a national franchise. We know this region, these neighborhoods, and the families here.
  • Consistent caregivers. We match caregivers thoughtfully and aim for consistency — your parent sees the same familiar face, not a rotating roster of strangers.
  • No long-term contracts required. Start with as many or as few hours as your family needs, and adjust over time.
  • Honest conversations. We will tell you plainly what we can and cannot do. Non-medical care is our lane, and we stay in it.
  • Quick response. Call 412-900-9354 and you will speak with a real person who can usually schedule a free assessment within a day or two.

Paying for Home Care in the North Hills

Cost is usually the first question families ask, and it is a fair one. Home care in the Allegheny County area can be paid for in several ways:

  • Private pay — families pay out of pocket, often using savings, retirement income, or a reverse mortgage
  • Long-term care insurance — many policies cover non-medical home care; we can help you understand what your policy includes
  • Pennsylvania Medicaid waivers — the Community HealthChoices (CHC) program may cover home care for eligible seniors enrolled in Medical Assistance; we can point you toward the right resources
  • Veterans benefits — if your parent served, the VA Aid and Attendance benefit may help offset costs; see our guide on VA Aid & Attendance for Pittsburgh Veterans
  • Highmark coverage — some Highmark Medicare Advantage plans include home care benefits

Taking the First Step

If you have been watching your parent struggle and wondering when the right time is to ask for help, the honest answer is: sooner is better. A little support early on can prevent a bigger crisis later.

We offer a free, no-pressure in-home assessment at your parent's home in the North Hills. A member of our team will visit, listen to your concerns, observe your parent's situation, and suggest a care plan that fits — nothing more, nothing less.

Call us at 412-900-9354, email info@maryangelshomecare.com, or visit our office at 135 Cumberland Rd., Suite 111, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. We are here when you are ready.

Not sure where to start? Our Home Care Consultation Checklist walks you through exactly what to ask any agency before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mary Angels Home Care serve my specific neighborhood in the North Hills?
We serve communities throughout the North Hills and greater Allegheny County, including McCandless, Shaler, Ross Township, West View, Millvale, Aspinwall, Fox Chapel, Etna, and nearby areas. Call us at 412-900-9354 and we can confirm service for your parent's specific address.
My parent was just discharged from UPMC Passavant. How quickly can care start?
We understand that hospital discharges often happen faster than families expect. In most cases we can schedule a free assessment and have a caregiver in your parent's home within 48 hours of your call. Let us know the situation and we will do everything we can to move quickly.
What is the difference between non-medical home care and home health care?
Non-medical home care — which is what Mary Angels provides — covers personal assistance, companionship, homemaking, and supervision. It does not include nursing care, wound care, medication administration, or physical therapy. Those services, called home health care, are provided by licensed clinical professionals and are usually ordered by a physician. If your parent needs both, the two types of care can often run side by side.
Can a caregiver help my dad get to his doctor appointments in the North Hills area?
Yes. Transportation assistance is one of the services we provide. A caregiver can drive your parent to appointments — whether at a local North Hills practice, UPMC Passavant, or a specialist in Pittsburgh — and accompany them inside if needed.
My mother has dementia and wanders at night. Do you offer overnight care?
Yes. We offer overnight and 24/7 live-in care for seniors who need continuous supervision, including those with Alzheimer's or dementia who may be at risk of wandering. Our caregivers are experienced with dementia-related behaviors and work to keep routines calm and consistent.
Is there a long-term contract required to start home care?
No. Mary Angels does not require a long-term contract. We work with families to build a schedule that fits their needs — whether that is a few hours a week or full-time care — and you can adjust the level of support as your parent's situation changes.
