What Personal Care Actually Means

Personal care is the day-to-day, hands-on assistance your parent needs to stay clean, comfortable, and safe — without having to leave the home they love. It is not medical treatment. There are no nurses or clinical procedures involved. It is a trained caregiver showing up, building trust, and helping with the tasks that have quietly become a struggle.

At Mary Angels Home Care, personal care services in Pittsburgh include:

  • Bathing and showering — with attention to fall risk and skin care (no medical wound care)
  • Dressing and undressing — choosing clothes, managing buttons, zippers, and adaptive clothing
  • Grooming — hair brushing, oral hygiene, shaving, nail care
  • Toileting assistance — bathroom help, continence care, changing briefs, and maintaining hygiene
  • Mobility and transfers — helping a parent move safely from bed to chair, down the hallway, or up the stairs

Everything is done at your parent's pace. Our caregivers are trained to ask, not assume — because even small choices (which shirt to wear, how warm the water should be) matter deeply to a person's sense of self.

Why Dignity Is at the Center of Every Visit

Accepting help with bathing or toileting is hard. For many Pittsburgh seniors, it feels like a loss. Our caregivers understand this, and they are trained to approach every task in a way that preserves as much independence as possible.

That means:

  • Knocking and asking before entering a room
  • Explaining each step before doing it
  • Encouraging the person to do whatever they can on their own
  • Using humor and conversation to make the experience feel normal, not clinical

Many families tell us that after a few visits, their parent actually looks forward to seeing the caregiver. That relationship is what makes the difference.

Who Personal Care Is Right For

Personal care is a good fit for Pittsburgh-area seniors and adults who:

  • Have reduced strength, balance, or coordination due to aging
  • Are recovering from a stroke, hip replacement, or knee replacement
  • Live with Parkinson's disease, arthritis, or another chronic condition
  • Have early-to-moderate Alzheimer's or dementia and need a calm, consistent routine
  • Are managing a chronic disease that makes self-care harder
  • Have a family caregiver who needs a break — even a few hours a week (respite care)

Personal care can be combined with companion care for families who want both physical assistance and social connection in a single visit, or with homemaker services if light housekeeping and errands are also needed.

How We Match a Caregiver to Your Parent

Not every caregiver is right for every person. We take the matching process seriously.

  1. Free in-home assessment — A Mary Angels team member visits your parent's Pittsburgh home, learns their routines and preferences, and listens to your concerns.
  2. Written care plan — We document exactly what help is needed, how your parent prefers to receive it, and any safety considerations (e.g., fall history, mobility aids).
  3. Caregiver introduction — We introduce a caregiver whose personality, availability, and experience fit your parent's needs.
  4. Ongoing communication — We stay in touch with the family. If something changes, we adjust.

We serve families throughout Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, including Squirrel Hill, Mt. Lebanon, North Hills, Shadyside, Oakland, and many surrounding communities. If you are not sure whether we cover your neighborhood, call us at 412-900-9354 — we are happy to check.

Getting Started With Personal Care in Pittsburgh

You do not need a doctor's order to begin non-medical personal care. You can call us directly at 412-900-9354 or email info@maryangelshomecare.com to schedule a free, no-obligation in-home assessment.

If you are wondering how to pay, there are several options available to Allegheny County families — including Pennsylvania Medicaid waivers such as Community HealthChoices (CHC), Veterans Administration benefits for eligible veterans, long-term care insurance, and private pay. We are glad to walk you through options during your assessment.

Not sure if this is the right next step? Read our guide on signs your aging parent needs home care — it may help you name what you have been seeing.

Frequently asked questions

Does personal care require a doctor's referral or prescription?
No. Non-medical personal care does not require a doctor's order. You can contact Mary Angels Home Care directly and schedule a free in-home assessment. If your parent is transitioning home after a hospital stay, we can coordinate with discharge planners, but a referral is not required to get started.
What is the difference between personal care and companion care?
Personal care involves hands-on physical assistance — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility. Companion care focuses on social connection, conversation, supervision, and light activities. Many families combine both in a single visit. If you are unsure which your parent needs, our free assessment will help clarify.
Will the same caregiver come every time?
We aim for consistency because we know it matters — especially for a parent who needs help with private tasks. We do our best to send the same caregiver on a regular schedule. If a caregiver is ever unavailable, we will notify you in advance and introduce any substitute before the visit.
My parent is resistant to accepting help. What should I do?
This is very common. Many Pittsburgh seniors feel embarrassed or worry about losing independence. It often helps to frame the caregiver as a helper with specific tasks rather than a 'caretaker.' Starting with a few short visits per week — even just help with showering — lets your parent build trust gradually. Our guide on talking to aging parents about accepting help may also be useful.
Can personal care be increased or decreased as needs change?
Yes. Your parent's care plan is not locked in. If their needs increase after a fall, a health change, or a hospitalization, we can add hours or services. If they recover and need less help, we can reduce visits. We stay flexible because life changes.
Is Mary Angels Home Care licensed to provide personal care in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Mary Angels Home Care is licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to provide non-medical home care services in Allegheny County and surrounding areas. All caregivers are screened, background-checked, and trained before their first visit.
