Why COPD Makes Daily Life So Hard

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) doesn't just affect the lungs — it reshapes every hour of the day. For seniors in Pittsburgh neighborhoods like the North Hills, Mt. Lebanon, or Squirrel Hill, a short walk to the kitchen or a flight of stairs can trigger breathlessness that takes thirty minutes to recover from.

The result is a quiet, invisible kind of exhaustion. Your parent may:

  • Skip meals because cooking feels like too much effort
  • Avoid bathing or grooming because getting dressed wipes them out
  • Stop going to medical appointments because transit is too tiring
  • Pull away from friends and family to hide how much they're struggling

None of this is laziness. It's COPD. And it's exactly where a non-medical home care aide can make a real difference.

What Our COPD Home Care Aides Actually Do

Mary Angels aides are not nurses and do not provide medical treatment. What they do is handle the physical and logistical work that steals energy from your loved one — so your parent can save their strength for breathing comfortably and enjoying their day.

Support may include:

  • Light housekeeping — vacuuming, dusting, and laundry done on your parent's behalf so they don't overexert
  • Meal preparation — nutritious, easy-to-eat meals planned around whatever diet their doctor recommends
  • Personal care assistance — help with bathing, dressing, and grooming at a slow, unhurried pace
  • Medication reminders — gentle prompts to take prescribed inhalers or pills on schedule (aides do not administer medication)
  • Errands and transportation — rides to doctors' offices, pharmacies, or grocery stores across Allegheny County
  • Companionship — someone calm and reassuring to be present during a difficult breathing episode

Our personal care and companion care services can be combined and adjusted as your parent's needs change season to season — Pittsburgh winters and humid summers can both be hard on COPD.

Pacing and Energy Conservation at Home

One of the most important things an aide does for a COPD client is simply slow things down. Rushing — even a little — can trigger a flare. Our caregivers are trained to:

  • Break tasks into smaller steps with rest breaks built in
  • Lay out clothing, supplies, and items in advance to minimize movement
  • Encourage sitting while performing tasks like grooming or meal prep
  • Watch for early warning signs of distress and encourage the family to contact their care team

This kind of pacing support is different from medical management. It's practical, day-to-day help — and it can meaningfully reduce how often your parent pushes past their safe limit.

For families whose loved ones need support overnight or around the clock, our 24/7 & live-in care option means someone is always there if breathing becomes difficult in the night.

Paying for COPD Home Care in Pittsburgh

Cost is one of the first questions families ask, and it's a fair one. Several options may help cover or offset the cost of home care for a Pittsburgh senior with COPD:

  • Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) program — the state's Medicaid waiver for home and community-based services may cover non-medical home care for eligible seniors. Enrollment through a managed care organization is required.
  • Veterans benefits — eligible veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can be used toward home care costs.
  • Long-term care insurance — if your parent has a policy, it likely covers non-medical personal care.
  • Private pay — straightforward hourly or live-in arrangements with no insurance paperwork required.

Our chronic disease care page has more on navigating these options, and our team is happy to walk you through what may apply to your family — no pressure, no obligation.

Mary Angels Home Care is a family-owned, women-owned agency based right here in Pittsburgh. We serve more than 20 neighborhoods across Allegheny County, including the North Hills, Mt. Lebanon, Monroeville, and many more.

If you're not sure whether we cover your parent's neighborhood, just call us at 412-900-9354 or email info@maryangelshomecare.com. We'll be straightforward with you about what we can offer and how quickly we can start.

A free, no-obligation in-home assessment is always the first step. We come to you, meet your parent, and put together a care plan that fits their breathing patterns, their daily routine, and your family's schedule — not a template.

Frequently asked questions

Can a home care aide help my mom manage her COPD flare-ups?
Aides are not medical professionals and cannot treat a COPD flare-up. What they can do is notice early signs that your mother is struggling — unusual breathlessness, agitation, difficulty speaking — and prompt you or her medical team to follow up. They can also ensure she is resting, avoid triggering exertion, and call 911 if the situation is an emergency.
My dad uses supplemental oxygen at home. Can your aides work around that?
Yes. Our aides are comfortable supporting clients who use supplemental oxygen. They do not manage or adjust oxygen equipment — that is the responsibility of your father's medical provider — but they can help him move safely through the home, assist with daily tasks while he is connected to his oxygen, and keep his living space organized and free of tripping hazards.
How do I know when COPD has gotten serious enough to need home care?
Common signs include your parent skipping meals or bathing because they feel too tired, staying in one room to avoid exertion, expressing anxiety about being alone, or having had a recent hospitalization. If any of those sound familiar, it may be time to call us. Our page on signs an aging parent needs help may also be useful.
Does Medicare pay for non-medical home care for COPD?
Standard Medicare (Parts A and B) generally does not cover non-medical or custodial home care such as personal care and companionship. Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver, veterans' benefits, and long-term care insurance policies are more common funding sources. We are happy to talk through what may apply to your family.
Can you provide care every day, or just a few hours a week?
We are flexible. Some families start with a few hours a day for meals and morning routines; others need full-time or live-in support. We can adjust hours as your loved one's condition changes, including increasing coverage during a difficult winter or after a hospitalization.
Is Mary Angels Home Care licensed in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Mary Angels Home Care is a PA-licensed non-medical home care agency. We are family-owned and women-owned, operating out of Pittsburgh since 2022 and serving clients across Allegheny County.
