How MS Changes Daily Life — and Where Home Care Fits In

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system that disrupts the signals between the brain and the body. Symptoms vary widely from one person to the next, but many Pittsburgh families find that their loved one eventually needs help with tasks that were once automatic: getting out of bed, preparing a hot meal, or simply having someone nearby when fatigue hits hard in the afternoon.

Mary Angels provides non-medical support — we are not nurses or therapists. What we do is show up every day with a calm, trained presence that reduces the physical and emotional burden on the person with MS and on the family members who love them.

Common challenges our caregivers help with:

  • Morning and evening routines (bathing, dressing, grooming) when fatigue or stiffness is worst
  • Meal preparation that respects dietary preferences and energy-conserving kitchen habits
  • Light housekeeping so the home stays safe and uncluttered
  • Transportation to medical appointments, therapy, or errands in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities
  • Companionship during long stretches at home when isolation becomes a real risk
  • Standby assistance and fall-safety monitoring for those with balance or gait problems

Adaptive Support for MS Relapses and Stable Periods

One of the hardest things about MS is that needs change. During a relapse, your family member may need several hours of help each day. During a stable stretch, a few hours of companion care or homemaker support may be all that is required.

Mary Angels builds care schedules that flex with the condition. We work with families in neighborhoods across Allegheny County — from Mt. Lebanon on the South Hills to McCandless in the North Hills — to adjust hours up or down as the situation changes, without locking you into a rigid contract.

Our personal care services cover hands-on assistance with bathing, dressing, and mobility. Our companion care fills the hours when your loved one simply needs another person in the room — someone to talk to, play cards with, or accompany on a short walk.

Caregiver Relief for Family Members

Caring for a spouse or parent with MS is a long-haul commitment. Many family caregivers in Pittsburgh manage this role alongside jobs, children, and their own health — and quietly run themselves down in the process.

Respite care gives you scheduled time off while a trained Mary Angels caregiver takes over. Whether you need a few hours on a Tuesday afternoon or a full weekend break, we can cover it. You return rested; your loved one is cared for by someone they already know and trust.

If your family member's needs are significant enough that someone should be present overnight or around the clock, our 24/7 and live-in care option provides a consistent caregiver who becomes a familiar face in the home.

What MS Home Care Looks Like in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a city of neighborhoods, and home care should feel local. Our caregivers serve clients in the city proper as well as communities throughout Allegheny County — including Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Oakland, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Bethel Park, and dozens of others. When you call us, we match you with a caregiver who knows your part of the region and can be there reliably.

A typical day for a Pittsburgh MS client with moderate needs might look like:

  • Morning (2 hours): Caregiver assists with bathing, dressing, and breakfast; lays out medications the client self-administers
  • Midday (1 hour): Light meal preparation and tidy-up; brief walk or seated exercises as instructed by the client's physical therapist
  • Afternoon (flexible): Companionship, errands, or transportation to an appointment in Oakland or Shadyside

This is not a rigid schedule — it is shaped around the person, not around a checklist.

Getting Started with MS Home Care in Pittsburgh

The first step is a free in-home assessment. One of our care coordinators visits the home, listens to the family's concerns, and helps design a schedule that makes sense. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Call 412-900-9354 or email info@maryangelshomecare.com to schedule your assessment. We are a family-owned, women-owned, PA-licensed agency, and we have been serving Pittsburgh-area families since 2022.

For families thinking through how to pay for ongoing care, our guide to chronic disease care and our how to pay for home care page walk through common options, including Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver program and long-term care insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is home care for MS covered by insurance or Medicaid in Pennsylvania?
It depends on the program. Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver can cover non-medical home care for eligible adults. Long-term care insurance policies often include personal care benefits. Medicare generally does not cover ongoing non-medical home care. We encourage families to review our guide on how to pay for home care, and we are happy to discuss your situation on a free call — we do not give legal or benefits advice, but we can point you toward the right resources.
My mother has MS but is mostly independent right now. Is it too early to start home care?
Many families find it helpful to start with just a few hours of companion care or homemaker services while needs are still modest. This gives your mother time to get comfortable with a caregiver before a harder stretch arrives. It also means there is no scramble during a relapse — the caregiver already knows the home and the routines.
Will the same caregiver come every time?
We aim for caregiver consistency because it matters for trust and routine, especially for someone managing a chronic condition like MS. We do our best to assign a primary caregiver and a reliable backup so coverage gaps are rare and familiar faces are the norm.
Can your caregivers help with a wheelchair or mobility equipment?
Our caregivers can assist with transfers, accompany a client who uses a walker or wheelchair, and help with safe movement around the home. We do not provide physical therapy or medical equipment training — those are medical services — but we work alongside and take direction from the client's therapy team.
What if my father's MS symptoms get worse and he needs more hours quickly?
We build flexibility into every care plan for exactly this reason. Call us when needs change and we will work to adjust the schedule, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours. For families who want a standing plan for high-need periods, our 24/7 and live-in care option is worth discussing during your free assessment.
Do you serve the suburbs, or only Pittsburgh proper?
We serve more than 20 communities across Allegheny County, including Mt. Lebanon, McCandless, Fox Chapel, Bethel Park, Sewickley, Monroeville, Cranberry Township, and many others. If you are not sure whether we cover your neighborhood, call 412-900-9354 and we will let you know right away.
