What ALS Families in Pittsburgh Face Every Day

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive condition that gradually affects the muscles needed for movement, speech, and swallowing. What that means at home — in neighborhoods like Mt. Lebanon, Squirrel Hill, or Cranberry Township — is that the tasks your loved one handled independently become harder, then impossible, over time.

Families often describe the early stage as manageable, but the middle and later stages can arrive faster than expected. The physical demands on family caregivers become enormous. Sleep deprivation, missed work, and emotional exhaustion are the norm, not the exception. That is where professional home care makes a real difference.

Mary Angels Home Care provides non-medical support — we do not administer medications, operate feeding tubes, or perform clinical procedures. What we do provide is consistent, dignified, hands-on help with the everyday tasks that define quality of life.

What Our ALS Home Care Includes

Our caregivers are trained to work alongside ALS families with patience and flexibility, adapting as needs change. Support can include:

  • Personal care: bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, dressing, and toileting assistance — done with respect for your loved one's privacy and preferences
  • Safe mobility support: helping with transfers (bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to chair), repositioning to prevent pressure sores, and moving safely around the home
  • Meal preparation and feeding assistance: preparing soft or blended foods, assisting at mealtimes, and keeping the kitchen clean
  • Homemaker services: laundry, light housekeeping, errands, and grocery runs so the home stays functional
  • Companionship: reading aloud, watching television together, playing cards, or simply sitting with your loved one so they are never alone
  • Transportation: accompanying your loved one to appointments, therapy sessions, or outings in and around Pittsburgh
  • Respite for family caregivers: scheduled relief so you can rest, work, or simply breathe

As ALS progresses, we can scale hours up — all the way to 24/7 and live-in care — so families do not have to scramble for help during a sudden change.

Helping Family Caregivers, Not Just the Person with ALS

If you are the adult child or spouse carrying most of the caregiving load, you already know how fast burnout sets in. ALS caregiving is physically demanding, emotionally heavy, and relentless. Bringing in a professional caregiver is not giving up — it is the most practical thing you can do to protect both yourself and your loved one.

Our respite care service is designed exactly for this situation. We step in on a scheduled or on-call basis so you can sleep, attend your own medical appointments, or spend a few hours doing something that restores you. Families across Allegheny County tell us that reliable respite is what allows them to keep caring at home far longer than they could have managed alone.

Navigating Home Care Costs for ALS in Pittsburgh

Cost is always a real concern. Here is what Pittsburgh families should know:

  • Long-term care insurance often covers non-medical home care for ALS. Review your policy's benefit triggers carefully.
  • Veterans benefits: If your loved one served, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Aid and Attendance program may help pay for in-home care. Call us and we can walk you through it.
  • Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver may cover home care for eligible individuals. Income and functional criteria apply.
  • Private pay is straightforward — we bill by the hour with no long-term contract required.

Our guide to paying for home care in Pittsburgh covers all of these options in plain language, and we are happy to talk through them on a free call.

Frequently asked questions

Is ALS home care the same as hospice or palliative care?
No. Hospice and palliative care are medically directed services typically involving nurses, physicians, and clinical staff. Mary Angels Home Care provides non-medical support — personal care, homemaking, companionship, and mobility assistance. Many ALS families use both at the same time: a medical hospice team handles clinical needs while our caregivers handle daily living support. We are happy to coordinate with your medical team.
How many hours of care does someone with ALS typically need?
It depends entirely on the stage of the disease and your family's capacity to help. In early stages, a few hours a day of personal care and homemaking may be enough. As ALS advances and more muscle groups are affected, needs often grow to full-time or live-in care. We start with a free in-home assessment to understand your specific situation, then build a schedule around it — and adjust over time as things change.
Can a caregiver help with repositioning and pressure sore prevention?
Yes. Our non-medical caregivers can assist with repositioning in bed or a wheelchair on a scheduled basis, which helps reduce the risk of skin breakdown. They can also alert the family or medical team if they notice any skin changes. They do not provide wound treatment — that requires a nurse — but they are an important frontline presence.
Do you serve the whole Pittsburgh area for ALS care?
We serve more than 20 communities across Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, including the North Hills, South Hills, East End, and surrounding townships. If you are unsure whether we cover your neighborhood, call us at 412-900-9354 and we will confirm quickly.
What happens if our ALS loved one's needs change suddenly?
ALS can progress unpredictably. We build care plans with flexibility in mind and can increase hours, shift to overnight care, or move to 24/7 live-in support when the situation calls for it. The goal is that you never have to scramble for a new provider — we grow with your family.
Can we get help paying for ALS home care in Pennsylvania?
Potentially, yes. Options include long-term care insurance (many policies cover non-medical care), the VA Aid and Attendance benefit for veterans, and Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) Medicaid waiver for those who qualify. Our team can walk you through each option at no cost to you.
