What Happens After a Senior Falls in Pittsburgh

A fall can send the whole family into a spin. Your parent may come home from the emergency room or a short rehab stay still shaky on their feet, and suddenly the house that felt familiar doesn't feel safe. The bathroom seems too slippery. The stairs feel steep. Getting dressed is exhausting.

This is exactly the moment many Pittsburgh families call us. Mary Angels Home Care steps in to provide steady, non-medical support during the weeks your parent needs the most help — without uprooting them from the home and neighborhood they love, whether that's Mt. Lebanon, Squirrel Hill, the North Hills, or anywhere across Allegheny County.

We are not a nursing or therapy agency. What we do is keep daily life manageable while your parent's physical therapist and doctor handle the clinical side.

How Our Caregivers Support Fall Recovery at Home

Our caregivers become a dependable presence in your parent's day. The kinds of tasks they help with during fall recovery include:

  • Personal care: Bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting — safely, with patience and dignity. (Learn more about personal care)
  • Mobility assistance: Steady support while moving through the home, getting in and out of bed or a chair, and using stairs.
  • Meal preparation: Cooking nutritious meals so your parent is eating well — important fuel for healing.
  • Light housekeeping: Keeping floors clear, laundry done, and the kitchen clean. (Homemaker services details)
  • Companionship: Falls can shake confidence badly. A friendly, calm presence helps ease anxiety and discourages the dangerous pattern of "just staying in the chair all day." (Companion care)
  • Transportation: Rides to follow-up appointments with orthopedic or primary care physicians.
  • Overnight and 24/7 care: If your parent needs continuous supervision during early recovery, we offer around-the-clock and live-in options. (24/7 & Live-In Care)

Our caregivers are not physical therapists and will not perform exercises prescribed by a therapist — but they can encourage your parent to stick to the plan and be there for safe movement around the home.

Reducing the Risk of a Second Fall

The hardest truth after a senior falls once is that the risk of falling again is elevated. A big part of what our caregivers do is simply being present and observant during the hours when family cannot be there.

Practical ways our team helps lower risk:

  • Reminding your parent to use their walker, cane, or grab bar — every time.
  • Reporting changes in steadiness, confusion, or pain to the family right away.
  • Keeping pathways clear of clutter, cords, and throw rugs.
  • Accompanying your parent to the bathroom at night, when many falls happen.
  • Noting anything in the home that looks hazardous, so you can address it.

For a fuller look at the home environment, our free assessment visit is a good starting point. You may also want to review our Home Safety Checklist for Aging Parents before the first caregiver visit.

Getting Started After a Hospital or Rehab Discharge

Many families reach out to us during the discharge planning process — sometimes with only a day or two of notice before their parent comes home. We understand that timeline, and we work quickly.

Here is what the process looks like:

  1. Call or email us. We talk through your parent's situation, schedule, and the level of help they need.
  2. Free in-home assessment. A Mary Angels team member visits your parent's Pittsburgh-area home to understand their routine and the layout of the space.
  3. Caregiver match. We introduce a caregiver who is a good fit for your parent's personality and needs.
  4. Care begins — typically within 48 hours of your first call.

If your parent was just discharged from a Pittsburgh hospital or rehab facility, our page on Home Care After Hospital Discharge in Pittsburgh walks through what to ask for before they leave.

Frequently asked questions

My parent just got home from the hospital after a fall. How quickly can you start?
We can usually arrange a first caregiver visit within 48 hours of your call. We will do a brief phone intake and then schedule a free in-home assessment, often on the same day or the next. If timing is extremely tight, call us at 412-900-9354 and we will do everything we can to move faster.
Is this the same as skilled nursing or physical therapy?
No. Mary Angels provides non-medical home care only. We do not offer nursing visits, wound care, injections, or physical therapy. Our caregivers help with personal care, mobility support, meals, housekeeping, and companionship. If your parent needs skilled nursing or therapy, their doctor or discharge planner will arrange those services separately — our role is to handle the daily-life support that surrounds that care.
Can a caregiver stay overnight during the early weeks of recovery?
Yes. We offer overnight, 24/7, and live-in care for situations where continuous presence is needed. This is common right after a fall when family members cannot be there through the night and a parent is not yet steady enough to manage alone. Talk to us about what schedule makes sense.
Will the caregiver help prevent another fall?
Our caregivers are trained to be observant and to keep the environment safer — reminding your parent to use their assistive devices, keeping pathways clear, accompanying them to the bathroom, and flagging anything that looks hazardous. We are not a substitute for a formal fall-risk evaluation by a physical therapist, but having a steady, attentive presence during recovery hours makes a real difference for many families.
Does insurance or Medicaid cover fall recovery home care?
It depends on your parent's coverage. Pennsylvania Medicaid, through the Community HealthChoices (CHC) waiver program, may cover non-medical home care for eligible seniors. Some long-term care insurance policies also cover it. We are happy to help you think through the options. Our page on paying for home care in Pittsburgh goes into more detail.
My parent lives in Mt. Lebanon — do you serve that area?
Yes, Mt. Lebanon is one of the many Allegheny County communities we serve. We cover more than 20 Pittsburgh-area neighborhoods. If you are not sure whether we reach your parent's street, just call us at 412-900-9354.
