Why a Home Safety Walk-Through Matters
Most older adults in Pittsburgh want to stay in their own homes — the house in Mt. Lebanon where they raised their kids, the Squirrel Hill row house they have lived in for forty years. That is completely understandable. But the same home that felt comfortable at 55 can quietly become a hazard at 80.
The good news: most risks are fixable with inexpensive changes. A $15 grab bar, a brighter light bulb, or a non-slip bath mat can change the outcome of an ordinary Tuesday morning. This checklist walks you through the areas that matter most.
If you notice several issues at once, it may be worth thinking about whether a caregiver checking in regularly — helping with housekeeping, personal care, or just keeping an eye on things — would give everyone more peace of mind. Our team at Mary Angels Home Care serves families all across Allegheny County and can talk through what kind of support might fit. Learn more about in-home care in Pittsburgh.
Bathroom Safety
The bathroom is where falls most often happen. Check every item below.
- Grab bars installed beside the toilet and inside the shower or tub (towel bars do not count — they pull out of the wall)
- Non-slip mat or adhesive strips on the floor of the tub or shower
- Bath chair or shower bench if your parent has balance concerns
- Non-slip rug on the floor outside the tub, secured so it cannot slide
- Night light so the path from bedroom to bathroom is lit after dark
- Lever-style faucet handles (easier to grip than knobs for anyone with arthritis)
- Hot water heater set to 120°F or below to prevent scalding
- Medications stored safely and clearly labeled
Kitchen Safety
- Frequently used items stored between waist and shoulder height — no reaching to high shelves, no bending to low cabinets
- Step stool with a handle if reaching is sometimes necessary (never a chair)
- Stove knobs easy to see and turn; consider a stove knob cover or auto-shutoff device if your parent sometimes forgets the stove is on
- Fire extinguisher mounted and accessible, checked within the past year
- Smoke detector working (test the button)
- Clear path from refrigerator to counter to stove — no boxes or grocery bags on the floor
- Good overhead lighting; replace dim bulbs with bright LEDs
Living Areas, Hallways, and Stairs
Clutter and poor lighting are the two biggest contributors to falls in common areas.
- All rugs secured with non-slip backing or double-sided tape, or removed entirely
- Lamp or switch within easy reach of every chair and the bed
- Extension cords and phone charger cables routed along walls, not across walkways
- Furniture arranged so there is a clear, wide path from room to room
- Handrails on both sides of every staircase, firmly anchored
- Stair treads in good repair — no loose carpet, no slippery wood
- Adequate lighting at the top and bottom of stairs
- A cordless or cell phone accessible from your parent's usual chair, so they can call for help without rushing
If your parent has Parkinson's disease, dementia, or vision changes, stairways deserve extra attention. A caregiver who visits regularly can also help flag new hazards as they develop. See our guide to Alzheimer's and dementia care in Pittsburgh for additional home tips specific to memory conditions.
Bedroom Safety
- Bed height appropriate — your parent should be able to sit on the edge with feet flat on the floor
- Night light or motion-sensor light between the bed and bathroom
- Phone or medical alert device within arm's reach of the bed
- No clutter on the floor around the bed
- Lamp switch reachable without getting up in the dark
- If your parent uses a walker or cane, it is placed right next to the bed every night — not across the room
Outdoor and Entry Areas
Pittsburgh winters make exterior safety especially important. Ice on a Mt. Lebanon driveway or front steps in Monroeville can be just as dangerous as any indoor hazard.
- Handrail on all exterior steps, secured and rust-free
- Good outdoor lighting at the front door and back entrance, ideally motion-activated
- Non-slip mat at every entry; replace worn mats
- Plan for snow and ice removal — who handles this when your parent cannot?
- Pathway from driveway or parking area to front door clear of uneven pavement or raised edges
- Emergency contact information posted inside the front door
When the Checklist Reveals More Than You Expected
Sometimes a walk-through confirms your parent is doing fine. Other times you walk away with a list of concerns — and a new worry about what happens on the days nobody is there.
That is where in-home care can make a real difference. A caregiver from Mary Angels Home Care can be there for a few hours a day or around the clock, helping with personal care, homemaking, companionship, and simply keeping an eye on safety. We serve families throughout Allegheny County, from the North Hills to Bethel Park to Penn Hills and beyond.
If falls are already a concern, our senior fall prevention and recovery guide has more detail. And if you are noticing signs that your parent may need more regular help, our page on signs your aging parent needs home care walks through what to watch for.
