How Many Hours of Home Care Does a Senior Need?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer — it depends on what your loved one can still do safely on their own. Here's a practical way to estimate the right number of hours, with realistic examples for Pittsburgh families.

Start with one question: what's no longer safe alone?
Forget hour formulas for a second. The real question is which daily tasks have become risky or are being skipped. Walk through these:
- Bathing — are they avoiding it, or is the shower a fall risk?
- Meals — eating well, or living on toast and skipped meals?
- Medications — taken correctly and on time?
- Mobility — steady, or having close calls?
- Memory — leaving the stove on, getting confused, wandering?
- Isolation — going days without real human contact?
The more boxes you check — and the more serious each one — the more hours you'll want. (Signs an aging parent needs help.)
Realistic levels (and what they cover)
A few hours, a few days a week (8–20 hrs) — the most common starting point. A caregiver helps with a shower, makes meals, tidies up, handles errands or a doctor's visit, and provides companionship. Great for someone mostly independent who needs a safety net. This is also a lifeline for a family caregiver who needs respite.
Daily support (20–40 hrs) — help every day, often mornings and evenings, for someone who needs consistent assistance with personal care, meals, and routine but is still safe alone for stretches.
24-hour or live-in care — for someone who can't be left alone: significant dementia, high fall risk, or recovering from a hospital stay. (24/7 & live-in care.) Not sure which? 24-hour vs live-in care, compared.
Three quick examples
- Mom in Squirrel Hill, early memory loss: 3 visits/week, 4 hours each (12 hrs) for showers, meals, and companionship — plus peace of mind.
- Dad after a hospital stay: daily 4-hour visits (28 hrs) for the first month while he regains strength, then scaled back.
- A parent with advanced dementia: live-in care so someone is always there.
Don't over-buy — or under-buy
Many families guess too low (and the caregiver is rushing) or too high (paying for hours they don't need yet). The honest move is a free assessment: we visit, look at the home and the routine, and recommend a starting schedule you can adjust any time — no long contracts. Call 412-318-4237 or book a visit.
